Organisational context
Development and Empowerment for Humanity (DEH) is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation founded in 2004 and based in Somalia to work with communities to break the vicious cycle of poverty through innovative community-owned solutions to achieve long-term wellbeing. At DEH, we believe that the local communities are experts in their situations. For the past 17 years, DEH has strengthened rural livelihood assets through innovative humanitarian initiatives, continuous community training, and knowledge transfer. We have responded to several humanitarian emergencies in South and Central Somalia by providing aid to the population affected by conflicts and natural crises with emergency relief, health care, nutrition services, clean water, and sustainable socio-economic programs in a multi-sectoral based approach. The Role
DEH is seeking a self-motivated, passionate and talented photographer to document DEH’s fieldwork to support organisational communications and highlight the growing humanitarian crisis in the region. They must take high-quality photos of DEH’s work for use in digital and print publications, social media, the website, and any other communications needs that may arise.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect at least 15 high-quality photos from every visit to the assigned location weekly
- Provide sufficient descriptions to identify locations, project sites, and relevant individuals depicted in each photo. The images and captions must be organised clearly and stored in a secured drive.
- Collect human stories by interacting and interviewing affected people in locations visited to highlight their situation in a dignified manner
- Provide raw footage of all videos footage and still images captured
- Regularly update DEH website and Twitter account
- Show appropriate sensitivity to the people being filmed by strictly adhering to DEH Beneficiary Consent Policy.
Qualifications & Experience Required Education
- University degree in any of the following disciplines: in Film, Photography, Graphic Design, communication & media, journalism or related field
- At least three years of professional experience in producing news, documentary films, TV programs.
- Excellent project management skills and experience working in Somalia, preferably Galmudug districts.
- Extensive knowledge of photography best practices and associated technology.
- Excellent in written communication skills and interpersonal communications skills;
- Respect for staff and beneficiaries.
- Must be detail-oriented.
- Excellent time management skills.
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Somali is required.
