Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

We believe that access to clean and sufficient quantities of water are critical to life and are essential elements for ensuring sustainable community development. The management of water resources is critical as it is strongly linked to food security, health and education. Families that do not have access to safe drinking water get sick from preventable waterborne diseases, spend a significant portion of their income on medication and would not be able to send their children to school. These strong interlinkages demonstrate the vital role water plays in people’s lives. Access to safe water and sanitation not only reduces the spread of disease and saves lives but plays an important role in other aspects of lives.

As such, we encourage the proper utilization of this scarce resource. Efficient use of water resources has become even more urgent given the impact of climate change. At DEH, we promote technologies and encourage adoption of strategies that help mitigate the risks of water shortage and the associated conflicts. We promote access to water by rehabilitating water catchments, Barkads and boreholes. We promote rainwater harvesting methods from the roofs of homes during the rainy season.

In terms of hygiene and sanitation, we promote awareness-raising activities such as safe storage, domestic treatment systems, mediation in potential conflicts arising over the management of the resource and integrated management of solid waste
